GeoDecisions Awarded PENNDOT GIS and IT Support Contract
February 19, 2003/Harrisburg, Pa.: GeoDecisions, a software-independent information technology (IT) company specializing in geographic information systems (GIS), was recently awarded a five-year contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT). Under this agreement, GeoDecisions and CIBER, GeoDecisions’ subcontracting partner, will provide IT and GIS support for PENNDOT’s Geographic Information Division’s (GID) Support and Development project.
"We started building a GIS 10 years ago," said Joe McGinnes, GID project manager for PENNDOT. "Although our system is mature, we need someone to help us develop new applications, enhance our database, and improve the distribution of information on the Web. Better information means better decisions."
GeoDecisions will provide GID with onsite experts to build upon the department’s GIS and IT successes, while continuing to position PENNDOT as a leader among the nation’s advanced transportation GIS organizations. The project includes provisions that will enable PENNDOT to:
- Consider means to translate between linear referencing methods
- Build and deploy additional Internet and intranet applications
- Enhance its state roadway graphics files and expand its capabilities to address local roads
- Continue to advance enterprise asset management and visualization capabilities
- Improve, support, and maintain existing desktop and Web applications
- Provide technical support for GIS computer systems
- Supply training and technology transfer opportunities to enhance staff capabilities
Prior to this contract, GeoDecisions partnered with the Bureau of Planning and Research to provide comprehensive IT and GIS application development, support, and cartographic services, in order to establish PENNDOT’s enterprise GIS.
