GeoDecisions Completes RNS Data Model Review
July 14, 2005/Harrisburg, Pa.: GeoDecisions, a leader in the information technology industry, recently provided the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) with a data model review for its Roadway Network System (RNS) project.
VDOT’s RNS project involves migrating its legacy mainframe highway inventory application into a more modern spatially enabled environment. To accomplish this initiative, VDOT asked GeoDecisions to advise the department on how to construct a data model that would integrate and spatially reference VDOT’s roadway features, such as pavement, road condition, and business data, including traffic counts and accident statistics.
In preparing its recommendations, GeoDecisions reviewed VDOT's RNS data model requirements and current linear referencing system (LRS). GeoDecisions concluded that an LRS-based data model would best enable VDOT to migrate and quickly link business and geospatial data.
GeoDecisions prepared its recommendations in a comprehensive report that included a conceptual data architecture and skeleton data model using the UNETRANS data model framework – a published template for storing transportation data in a spatially enabled database from ESRI®.
“GeoDecisions provided concrete recommendations substantiated by preliminary testing under budget and ahead of schedule,” said Scott McCombe, VDOT’s project manager. “GeoDecisions’ data model review report will provide the template and springboard from which VDOT can launch detailed data modeling followed by proof of concept development.”
