MPMS Maps Wins Honor Award at ACEC/PA 2007 Diamond Awards
(Feb. 2, 2007/Harrisburg, Pa.) The Multimodal Project Management Systems (MPMS) Maps application received the top honor in the Surveying and Mapping Technology category in the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania’s (ACEC/PA’s) 2007 Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence competition.
The Honor Award was presented to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Bureau of Planning and Research and the PennDOT Center for Program Development and Management, as well as to GeoDecisions, a geospatial technology firm specializing in geospatial solutions, for their efforts to design and implement the application.
MPMS Maps has transformed the way PennDOT plans for and manages transportation improvement projects in the Commonwealth. With it, PennDOT can actually visualize information about transportation projects on a map and perform in-depth analysis in ways not possible before.
Prior to MPMS Maps, information about state transportation improvement projects were maintained only on spreadsheets. This format offered limited analysis capabilities. Plus, mapping project locations could take days and required assistance from a geographic information system (GIS) specialist.
MPMS Maps uses GIS technology to enable users to access, view, and analyze project information. With this functionality, PennDOT can make better decisions on prioritizing projects and allocating funds, thereby preserving taxpayer dollars, ensuring the best use of resources, and providing quality public service.
“MPMS Maps has become an essential tool for accurately displaying and reporting highway and bridge project information for PennDOT and its planning partners,” said John Parker, transportation planning specialist at PennDOT.
The application is available through the Internet, offering access and visibility to a wide range of users. State planning organizations can use it to monitor Pennsylvania’s progress in implementing its transportation improvement projects; the public can access information about projects in their communities; and elected officials can track the status of projects in their districts.
PennDOT sets the national standard for departments of transportation with the development and use of MPMS Maps. Because MPMS Maps provides a visual and geographic location of projects, the application can play a significant role for planning organizations. These organizations are charged with evaluating and determining the condition and performance of Pennsylvania’s transportation system, as well as assessing the resources required to preserve, restore, extend, and expand transportation facilities and services.
