GeoDecisions Celebrates GIS Day with National Educational Outreach Initiative

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology students confirm the coordinates of a U.S. survey marker in Harrisburg using survey-grade and hand-held global positioning systems.(Dec. 3, 2007/Harrisburg, Pa.) GeoDecisions, an award-winning leader in the information technology industry specializing in geospatial solutions, celebrated the annual geographic information system (GIS) Day on Nov. 14, 2007, with a series of presentations and lectures at colleges and universities across the country. The presentations featured real-world examples of this extraordinary technology to educate students about GIS and its extensive applications and benefits.

GIS Day is a global, grassroots event held during the third week of November aimed at providing a better understanding of GIS in our communities, schools, and organizations. GeoDecisions delivered presentations on the official celebration date, as well as throughout the month of November.

“GeoDecisions was thrilled to be part of the global effort to help build an understanding of the growing use of this technology,” said Robert M. Scaer, P.E., president of GeoDecisions. “Collaborating with universities is a rewarding way to share our knowledge of the industry. It is important that students learn about opportunities in the field and how this technology can benefit people everyday.”

GeoDecisions’ nationwide educational outreach efforts included interactive workshops and presentations at Iowa State University, University of South Florida (USF), The University of Texas at Austin, Harrisburg Area Community College, Central Pennsylvania College, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, University of Delaware, Old Dominion University, Hampton University, and Dickinson College.

“The presentation at the University of South Florida gave students a good idea of how GIS is being applied in the real world and perfectly fit the theme of GIS Day,” said Jianguo Ma, Ph.D., GIS coordinator with the Department of Geography at the USF.

In Pennsylvania, GeoDecisions partnered with the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology to lead students in a hands-on exercise to confirm the coordinates of a U.S. survey marker in Harrisburg using survey-grade and hand-held global positioning systems.
