GeoDecisions Develops Traffic Management Center Strategy
(March 7, 2007/Harrisburg, Pa.) – GeoDecisions, a geospatial technology firm specializing in geospatial solutions, partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to develop a statewide strategy for Traffic Management Centers (TMCs). When complete, a 24/7 statewide operational environment will be created that effectively addresses the operational needs of Pennsylvania’s urban and rural transportation networks.
GeoDecisions worked closely with PennDOT’s Bureau of Highway Safety and Traffic Engineering personnel, each of PennDOT’s 11 districts, and key regional and statewide stakeholders to develop this strategy. Utilizing PennDOT’s Transportation Systems Operations Plan, GeoDecisions coordinated with these organizations to determine how existing District TMCs, the proposed Regional TMCs (RTMCs), and the proposed Statewide TMC (STMC) will operate throughout the Commonwealth.
The flexible, multi-phase strategy includes an interim STMC/RTMC environment that will provide basic 24/7 statewide operations within two years; a five-year plan to implement the new STMC; two upgraded RTMCs; and key hardware, software, communications, and 511 traveler information capabilities. PennDOT’s 10-year plan to deploy additional intelligent transportation system (ITS) field devices will also provide enhanced statewide field device coverage on major limited access highways throughout Pennsylvania.
