GeoDecisions was contracted to update PennDOT's VideoLog application, which has traditionally been one of the Bureau of Planning and Research's
(BPR's) most requested intranet tools. The old version of VideoLog used a single, front-view image for state highways. It lacked reporting capabilities and any real functionality other than video image display, and was retired in 2002. Version 2 of the PennDOT VideoLog application resulted in a completely redesigned interface, added two right-of-way views in addition to the center image to create a panoramic view of the roadway, and incorporated Roadway Management System (RMS) reports for roadway administrative, geometry, guide rail, and shoulder information. Global positioning system (GPS) data and GIS mapping are used to provide a graphical interface for selecting different roadway segments or selecting a particular point along the selected segment, such as an intersection or bridge. As part of BPR's Generic Mapping Interface (GMI) architecture design, the VideoLog application provides access to other BPR visualization Web services, including Interactive GIS Query, Straight-Line Diagrams, and the Data Dictionary applications. This enterprise application exposes a Web Services API to allow any PennDOT programmer or contractor to access VideoLog services, thus expanding the application's use throughout the organization and providing visualization capabilities to asset management applications.
