Roadway Weather Information System Master Plan

We planned and developed intelligent transportation system (ITS) technologies and solutions for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's (PennDOT's) roadway weather information system (RWIS). As part of the project, our firm was responsible for the development of a strategic plan for the future direction of the RWIS. The project included three key tasks, which consisted of identifying the current and potential uses of RWIS; reviewing current technologies and national initiatives; and providing deployment and program direction. The final result was the development of an action plan to help improve RWIS performance and to integrate RWIS into roadway weather management and transportation operations activities.

The RWIS strategic plan provides guidance on program management, funding, and programming and performance monitoring. Additionally, a gap analysis was conducted and deployment guidance was provided on a corridor and district-wide basis with consideration of various physiographic regions and climatic patterns.
