Data Warehouse Strategic Plan
Client: Kansas Department of Transportation
GeoDecisions worked with KDOT to spatially enable its data warehouse during its early development and to assist with modeling data that is staged to the data warehouse. In 2007, KDOT desired to move the data warehouse to the next level and determined that it was necessary to develop a strategic plan for how to approach the project during the next five years.
GeoDecisions conducted data warehousing education sessions, visioning workshops, and detailed interviews with representatives throughout the department. After evaluating the results of the workshops and interviews, strategic tasks were identified and grouped into four areas: organization, process, technology, and data.
Most of the organization, process, and technology strategic tasks will be implemented to better align the KDOT Data Warehouse Team with the needs of the department. The data related strategic tasks, however, were numerous and required a process to prioritize which data should be included in the data warehouse.
A prioritization workshop was conducted with representatives throughout the department and then validated with executive management. This process allowed the strategic planning team to focus on the key data and information most appropriate for the data warehouse during the next five years and allowed KDOT to identify what schedule and budget would be necessary for including the needed data in the data warehouse.
GeoDecisions developed a Data Warehouse Strategic Plan that provided KDOT a path to facilitate better access to data, better data integration, and better data analysis capabilities.
