I-91 Design-Build ITS Final Design Services

As the lead design firm on the I-91 intelligent transportation system (ITS) design-build project, we worked with the prime contractor to provide a fully functioning ITS system along I-91 and I-291 in western Massachusetts. The project stretched from the Connecticut state line to the Vermont state line and included 35 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, 17 variable message signs, 54 miles of fiber optic cable, and a five-mile wireless communication system.

The project also included installing a District Traffic Operations Center in the Massachusetts Highway Department (MassHighway) District 2 Headquarters, integrating the devices into the Statewide Traffic Operations Center in Boston, Mass., and providing video images from the CCTV cameras to the Northampton State Police (Troop B) Barracks and Springfield and Shelburne State Police facilities.

In order to better refine the locations of the CCTV cameras, we used a camera van to capture video at the proposed locations. We followed the systems engineering process, including the completion of a concept of operations, detailed functional requirements, and the preparation of acceptance test plans. On the design side, we prepared communication plans, ITS device site plans, sub-system block diagrams, structural and foundation plans, and electrical plans for the I-91 system.
